A Place to Stand

from Sarah Smout

This is my first self-published collection of poetry, some of which has been modified into lyrics on my EP. It's hand-bound with natural waxed thread, and printed on recycled card and paper.
It features beautiful illustrations by artist Matthew Snow.
For those who want to read more, here is a little note from the inside cover:

These are poems from my homelands. Yorkshire; my childhood home, a haven of green fields, adventure on wind-whipped moors and the place my identity grew from.
Scotland has always been far away and close to my heart. Long journeys across land and sea led me to places of sanctuary, of spiritual and mental comfort, of unreal white sandy beaches, and islands that say “it’s going to be alright”.
Changes to these places throughout my life have shaped my consciousness of our connection to the land - how it can be tangled, unclear, distant and ugly.
It is this human struggle to cope with changes to our homeland that inspires my writing; whether a personal, specific place of identity and home, or the global, environmental destruction that we are involved in as a species.
The mental seal between us and the land has been damaged repeatedly, but I question the usefulness of despair, blame or even hope, without an attempt to find a way to re-seal that bond that exists in our consciousness as beings, as children, as tribes. This is my way; through reflections of and journeys back to the places I learnt to stand. And how I find myself looking differently at those places, or how they look back at me, as change dictates its age old story.
